Weekly books roundup

Tod Caviness here, with an advance copy of Stephen King’s 11/22/63, a time-travel thriller revolving around the Kennedy assassination. That’s appropriate: At 849 pages, this book might actually stop a bullet. Between this and Haruki Murakami’s 1Q84 (944 pages), I am getting some exercise.

- A fond sayonara to Naomi Butterfield, who will be doing her final turn as host of Soft Exposure tonight. I’ve had the pleasure of reading there a couple of times, and the bi-weekly series has always been one of the classiest and most comfortable literary open mikes around. No word yet on Naomi’s replacement, if there is one. Stop by tonight and get the news from her – plus a lot of great poetry – when Soft Exposure opens up at 6:30 p.m. at Infusion Tea, with featured singer/poet Robert Johnson of the local band Everyday Ghosts.

Poet and memoirist Paul Guest

- And a hello (again) to award-winning poet and former Sentinel staffer Terry Godbey. You may have heard Godbey’s work in the recent Pink Ribbon Project at the Orlando Repertory Theater, where an actor read her poem “Infusion Fridays” as part of a performance to benefit breast cancer awareness. Her new book “Flame” is due out in January from Finishing Line Press, with pre-orders available soon online.

- For some more immediate gratification, catch University of Virginia professor Paul Guest at a reading 7 p.m. this Friday (Oct. 28) at Valencia College’s Winter Park Campus, rooms 224-226. Bits of “My Index of Slightly Horrifying Knowledge,” his latest poetry collection, are still stuck in my head. “One More Theory About Happiness,” a memoir, is out now from Ecco.
